I Don’t Want to Get Bulky

5570400324_f68879b394_z

I never attempted to work out until I was in graduate school. I made it a personal project to work out every weekday and create a habit, but by default I did only cardio. It was a lot less intimidating. I would walk by the weight room, but I had no idea how to use the machines, what the movements were, or what the etiquette was. As a result, I never went in and never learned to lift weights.

Now, years later, I teach people to lift weights. One of the gifts of my job is being able to open up the world of weight lifting to them. To demystify it and make it fun. It’s not the guys doings curls in the gym. It’s not trying to get in and out of those contraptions of machinery. It’s something really rewarding.

When new female clients come into the gym, they frequently share a common concern. “Will it make me bulky?” Here’s the short and simple answer – no. No, you won’t get bulky.  The truth is, it’s really hard to get bulky. There are people who put a lot of time and effort into building muscle and it takes work. It won’t happen accidentally. I promise you.

You don’t have the hormones. Women just don’t naturally have enough testosterone to become muscular like a man. The women you see out there who do appear excessively muscular are most likely taking steroids, coupled with supplements and specific nutrition, and a lot of long hard hours in the gym.  Again, this will not happen to you by accident.

This isn’t to say some of you aren’t more genetically predisposed to developing muscle than other women. I acknowledge these women exist and I fall into that group myself. Just like some women are naturally tall and slender and some women are voluptuous – some women are naturally athletic in build. This is a healthy and good thing. There are people out there who wish they were you. Successful athletes are like you. Don’t wish it away.

Don’t feed it, if you don’t want it. One thing that can happen when you start a new workout regimen is that you stimulate your appetite. What can be perceived as mass gain may just be weight gain. It takes the building blocks we get from food to add either fat or muscle to our bodies. If we don’t provide the calories, we won’t put on either. Don’t starve yourself! Eat healthy, but remember that your hunger pangs may just be your body adjusting to a new workout regimen.

Lifting heavy is good for you. On the positive side, weight lifting is great for maintaining bone. This is something vital for all women as we age. Strong muscles means strong bones and the earlier you start resistance training the more benefit you will receive.

Muscle also creates shape! That word “toned” that trainers use all the time? What they are talking about is creating shape for your body, creating a pleasing silhouette. Think about what fat feels like and the consistency of it. Think about what the consistency of muscle feels like. Wouldn’t your body make and maintain a better shape if it were made out of muscle?

The best advice I can give you is to find a good trainer or a reputable gym to train at that teaches weight lifting classes. I personally learned about weight lifting through CrossFit LA and the CrossFit community at large, but there are other avenues out there. Find an expert and learn everything you can from them. You will look and feel better…and you might be surprised how much fun it is to be strong.

Last summer I bought myself a new television – a BIG television. The salesman asked me if I wanted help out of the store and I proudly said, “nope!”  I picked it up and carried it out myself, much to his surprise.  That’s a good feeling – and that’s from weight lifting.

What Makes Being a Woman Amazing

163135_10150351613825635_682815634_16381669_7799225_n

Back in the summer of 2010 I made a big decision. It was a decision that was difficult to keep private, despite its very personal nature. It was difficult, because it was both personal and public at the same time, and intimately related to being female. So what was my big decision? Here was the blog I wrote about it:

“What Makes Being A Woman Amazing”

(…or “What I’m Buying and Why I’ll Be Absent a While”)

Recently I made a decision to purchase what I consider to be a very nice gift to myself. It is something I have wanted for a very long time and something that will have lasting value. Indeed, it is something I will literally enjoy the benefit of on a daily basis for the rest of my life. Although expensive, when viewed in light of its longevity and in terms of the quality of the item, it is most definitely worth the price.

And to my surprise, I have discovered people have a rather strong opinion about what I have decided to give myself. People, without fail, have a reaction to my sharing. Some share my enthusiasm, some are judgmental, some are surprised, and some others are probably hiding from me what they really think.

So what in the world am I buying for myself? Well, first let me tell you why I’m buying it.

I have a clear idea of how I imagine a woman who has reached her full potential appears in the world. She is beautiful. She is strong. She is intelligent. She is feminine, sexy, active, witty, educated, and fun. I think a woman can be athletic and attractive at the same time. I know this, in part, because of CrossFit and the women who populate the CrossFit community.

And yet, working out can in some cases affect the feminine side of things. Which brings me to my purchase…

I love being a girl. I love being girlie. I know, some of you are thinking, “You lift heavy stuff and punch things and I’ve never seen you in a skirt.” Well, that’s just because you only see me at the gym. I love manicures, I love high heels, I love make-up and mini skirts, and I love being a girl. I love being shaped like a girl.

And herein lies the problem – the fitter I get and the leaner I get, the more my naturally unshapely upper body becomes, well, increasingly unshapely. Decreased body fat is nice for your abs…but not so much for your girl parts. I didn’t start with a whole lot and I don’t have a lot to spare.

For many years I’ve wished things were a little different, even previous to CrossFit.   Today, I feel fitter and happier than I’ve ever been, and more beautiful than ever before in my life.  I am diligent about caring for my body on every level.  But there’s always that one thing…that I just wish was different…that I picture differently in my head…and I believe that if something is a consistent complaint, you either accept it and get over it, or you do something about it. And as of now, I’m doing something about it.

At 8:00am this coming Thursday morning I’ll become the proud owner of a set of breast implants. I am considering it an early birthday present to myself and I’m really genuinely excited about it. I can’t wait to fit my clothes better and feel even more feminine, beautiful and complete. I’ll have to take some time off from working out, which honestly, is one of the main reasons I hadn’t done the procedure before. But for me, I feel like the downtime will be an investment for me and in me. An investment in feeling whole and creating myself and my life as I dream them to be.

Which is what it comes back to for me and why I want to speak about this publicly – being a complete woman means I can be strong, I can be muscular, I can be feminine and if I want to rock a mini-skirt I can do that, too. I don’t have to feel bad about being muscular. I don’t have to feel bad about wanting to be a girlie-girl. One doesn’t take away from the other and in fact, it’s what makes being a woman amazing.

Yoked

eddierg

When she shook my hand before our match began I knew I was in trouble. The referee stood between us and gestured for us to shake. The sweat on the bottom of my feet made me stick to the wrestling mat. I wiped my palms off on my t-shirt. She wrapped her hand around mine.  Her grip was strong. Her bicep bulged beneath her rash guard. Her clothes were all skin tight. She was, as my Jiu-Jitsu coach would later state, yoked.

The referee started us. We clinched. Maybe she took me down. Maybe I pulled half-guard. Either way, we ended up on the ground with her on top. She pressed her weight down on me. I could hear my coach clearly and I tried everything he said. I could not move. All my favorite moves, my favorite sweeps, practiced over and over, all for naught. Eventually she got my arm. Eventually I tapped.

My coach, Eddie, took me aside. This was my third tournament. The third time things had gone this way. My fourth place medals were simply for being the fourth and final girl to show.

“You’ve got to get strong,” Eddie implored. “You know the techniques, maybe better than anybody, but you’ve got to figure out how to get strong.”

He turned and glanced behind us as my competitor walked away.

“Damn,” he exclaimed, holding his hands in front of him and flexing in a strong man pose as he said the word. “That girl was yoked!”

Six years later I ran into Eddie in Las Vegas. I had not seen him in a while. I had not trained Jiu-Jitsu in quite some time.

“Damn,” he said, “You’ve got guns!” He made me flex for the man standing with him before introducing me.

“Every time I see a new picture of you on Facebook I remember that conversation we had,” he said. “Do you remember that conversation?”

“Yes,” I replied, “And I did what you said. I went and got strong.”

“Yeah, you did,” he said. “You didn’t have legs like that before.”

I was wearing tight black leggings and a sleeveless shirt. The man standing with Eddie nodded at me in agreement.

It was through following Eddie’s advice that I discovered CrossFit. I discovered my whole new world of weight lifting, running, gymnastics and competition. I started CrossFit to get strong for Jiu-Jitsu. I eventually quit Jiu-Jitsu. I got strong for my life. I discovered my life. I found my muscles and I found my voice.

Earlier today I was taking a CrossFit class at Team Quest MMA. The other women in the class were whispering about me, unaware I could hear them. Out of the corner of their eyes they were watching me do pull ups. Inside I was smiling. This is how it always goes.

“She’s doing those for real,” they whispered.

I continued in my workout. I did some toes-to-bar.

“What are those?” one of them whispered.

“I don’t know, but I’ve seen them on a video before,” the other replied.

I almost laughed out loud. I kind of loved these women for that one. I got down off the bar and introduced myself. They were embarrassed. They thought they were being secretive. I joked with them and we all laughed.

Because I get it. I used to be them.

I used to look at that girl and wish I was her. I used to look at that girl and think I could never do that, that it was ridiculous, that it was impossible. It was impossible for me. I shook that girl’s hand and felt her strength. I lost to her.

But not anymore. No more baggy t-shirts for me. No more being held in place. I went and got strong.
